Eliza is one of our 2019 Leadership Competition winners. You can check out her winning entry here and her bio below.
How old are you, what grade are you in, and what community do you live in?
I am seventeen years old and I am in year 12. I live in Almaden, Far North Queensland.
Why did you enter Country to Canberra’s Leadership Competition?
As the 8th of 13 children from a tiny and remote town west of Cairns, I know that my aspirations to become a professional architect or engineer will be extremely difficult without strategies and support. My background has not equipped me sufficiently for the complexity and challenge of tertiary study.
What do you hope to get out of the Power Trip to Canberra?
I hope to improve my skills in networking, technology and communication. I look forward to meeting inspirational people to tap into their enthusiasm, skill and drive. I believe the mentoring program will empower me to reach my leadership potential and survive my first challenging year in a city.
Who is your role model and why?
My mother is my greatest role model. She has raised 12 children in challenging circumstances but given us all the motivation to become educated, seek worthwhile careers and extend our horizons beyond Almaden. She is finally entering the work force to earn her own money in her forties.
What’s your favourite thing about living in rural Australia?
My favourite thing about living in rural Australia is the serenity and stillness that the
Outback brings, away from the commotion of urban life. Growing up in a rural community, one is less exposed to negative influences present in cities and more attuned to country, nature and oneself.
What’s your favourite quote?
“I do not agree with what you say, but I would give my life for your right to say it” – Voltaire
What’s your main goal or ambition (right now, or in the future)?
My current goal is to graduate from Year 12 and receive an offer from the University of Sydney to study Engineering next year. I plan on becoming an Engineer or architect, enter the work force, earn money, be independent and sustain myself. A personal goal is to contribute constructively to the world. As a proud Kuku Yalanji woman I hope to help my people in the future through my achievements and in practical ways.
Tell us a couple of things you do to relax or have fun?
To help relax and have fun I like to do physical activities such as rugby league. I also enjoy talking and spending time with my friends and family. I’m a social person and I like the balance of fitness, study, sport and interaction with others.
