Gwen Rumbel- Winner 2023

Year 12 | 17 Years | Dungog High School | Dungog, New South Wales

Why did you enter Country to Canberra’s Leadership Competition?

I’m always looking for ways to improve my leadership skills to better contribute to my community, whether through school, volunteering or ambitious interstate pursuits. Country to Canberra aligned with my values of personal growth and community empowerment so the competition seemed perfect to explore how rural communities need strong leaders.

What do you hope to get out of the Power Trip?

I can’t wait to meet the rest of the winners and form long-lasting connections through networking. I hope that throughout the trip I can share my ideas, apply my values in professional situations and raise key concerns with those who can help create change within little communities like mine.

Who is your role model and why?

I believe a role model is someone you look to that has any admiral traits you hope to emulate in your own life. Hence, my role models include friends, family and mentors and sometimes people I have never met that all inspire me to self-improve.

What’s your favourite thing about living in rural Australia?

Like most fortunate enough to live in rural Australia, I love the tight-knit community and our strength together to overcome challenges. I love the non-judgemental social atmosphere and natural beauty that my area offers. And of course, I love the versatile lifestyle that accommodates and welcomes everyone.

What’s your main goal or ambition (right now, or in the future)?

After I have completed my HSC exams I look forward to the preparation for university and continuing my involvement in work, volunteering and studying topics I have a passion for. Looking to the future, I see myself chasing my ambitions by exploring a new environment for further education.

Tell us a couple of things you do to relax or have fun?

I have always enjoyed art as an outlet and practice painting and music when I have time. I especially enjoy being outdoors in nature and find myself exploring bike tracks, bushwalking paths and other hidden gems in my area with friends and family for fun.
