Describe yourself in 80 words or less.
I am energetic and very outgoing. I love a good laugh and can be described as a people person as I enjoy developing relationships with others and learning about their passions and interests. I have a tendency towards positivity and strive to build others up. I am hard
working and love to talk, learn and create!
How old are you, what grade are you in and what community/town do you live in?
I am currently 16 years old and am in year 11 at Nhulunbuy High School. I live in Nhulunbuy, a remote community in East Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory.
Why did you enter Country to Canberra’s Leadership Competition?
Hannah Wandel and her team visited my school earlier in the year during their road trip. They set up a Project Empower workshop which I participated in and the team encouraged us to enter their leadership competition. I was inspired by the team’s passion and ambition and wanted to learn more about how I can be a part of the gender equality movement.
What do you hope to get out of the Power Trip to Canberra?
I can’t wait to represent both my state and community. I want to be empowered and learn how I can empower others. I am really looking forward to learning more about gender inequality, so that I can act on my knowledge and drive change. I am also super excited to meet female politicians and leaders and learn from their experiences.
Who is your role model and why?
I am surrounded by strong women in my family who inspire me, however, my mum is my biggest role model. She inspires and encourages me every day to keep a positive attitude and treat others with love and respect. She is a hard worker and as a teacher, cares deeply about her students and their education. Additionally, leaders such as Martian Luther King Jr inspire me.
What’s your favourite thing about living in rural Australia?
There are lots of things I love about living remote. The community spirit is something I really admire about my community. People are so willing to rally together in order to support each other- it is incredibly encouraging.
What are you passionate about?
I am passionate about many things, however some of my main passions include education and health (both mental and physical).
What’s your favourite quote?
‘It takes a village to raise a child’. I have grown up surrounded by family and firmly believe that without guidance and support from them, I would not be the person I am today. I believe this quote isn’t just applicable to a child- everyone needs a support system, or ‘village’. It is true- we must all raise each other up within this environment!
What’s your main goal/ambition right now?
To provide as many opportunities for myself as possible, whether it be regarding academics, leadership, sport or travel!
Tell us a couple of things you do to relax/have fun?
I love all things creative, whether it be art, drama or singing! I also enjoy long distance running and travel with my family. Where I live, we go ‘out bush’ a lot- this just means that we drive to nearby waterholes or beaches for day trips or to camp- this is one of my favourite things to do!
