Jaimee is one of our 2019 Leadership Competition winners. You can check out her winning entry here and her bio below.
How old are you, what grade are you in and what community/town do you live in?
I am seventeen years old and I am in year 11. I live in Busselton, Western Australia.
Why did you enter Country to Canberra’s Leadership Competition?
I entered the leadership competition because I wanted to push myself. I know how dangerous it is to be too comfortable, and how important it is to do the things that scare you; to throw yourself in the deep end, as that is where you learn the most. The possibility of being selected for this opportunity was both exciting and terrifying, hence why I knew it was important I applied.
What do you hope to get out of the Power Trip to Canberra?
I am interested in discussing social issues and finding solutions for them, and believe this opportunity will give me the chance to have these discussions with like-minded people, developing my skills to respond to issues critically and sensitively. I also hope to meet new people and improve my networking skills.
Who is your role model and why?
My parents are significant role models for me; both work incredibly hard and have taught me to always challenge myself. I also have one friend in particular who has taught me how crucial optimism is when pushing for change; a pessimist will focus on the problem, whilst an optimist will focus on seeking a solution.
What’s your favourite thing about living in rural Australia?
My favourite thing about living in rural Australia is having had a childhood surrounded by such a stunning natural environment. Constantly exposed to this, I’ve learnt that “home” extends out from my house and to the sea I swim in, the bush I walk through and the woodlands I go camping in, and how vital it is to look after it.
What’s your favourite quote?
I have what I have and I am happy.
I’ve lost what I have lost and I am still happy.
-Rupi Kaur
What’s your main goal or ambition (right now, or in the future)?
At the moment, I want to continue through my ATAR courses with highly levels of enthusiasm. More long term, I want to make the most of every opportunity that comes my way, and explore a variety of potential careers before settling on one where I am doing something I love as well as constantly being challenged.
Tell us a couple of things you do to relax or have fun?
I spend majority of my summer at the beach where I can spend hours reading. I love being creative, so enjoy writing as well as art and craft activities. I also have a fantastic group of friends I perform drama productions with, which allows me to exercise my creativity with other like-minded people.
