Kara is one of our 2019 Leadership Competition winners. You can check out her winning entry here and her bio below.
How old are you, what grade are you in and what community/town do you live in?
I am fifteen years old and I am in year 10. I live in Mareeba, Far North Queensland.
Why did you enter Country to Canberra’s Leadership Competition?
Firstly, it was advertised at school parade and I thought, “This is me!” When leaving parade, my Deputy Principle suggested (in a direct manor) that I should apply for this competition. I went home and read more about it and immediately fell in love with what C2C stands for.
What do you hope to get out of the Power Trip to Canberra?
I can see this opportunity empowering me to reach my leadership potential and continue to overcome the barbed wire fence in front of me to reach my future goals. Then I will pass these skills on to others to do the same.
Who is your role model and why?
The women in my family all inspire me. My Mum, Grandmothers, Great Grandmothers and Aunties all share common traits; being strong, confident and passionate (some say stubborn). These women are the backbone in our family. They strive for success for all of us, through good and bad times, while often putting their own needs last.
What’s your favourite thing about living in rural Australia?
I love that my family is just around the corner. My friends are just up the road and support is always in your pocket, which can be a little too close at times. But, to not have them in your pocket, would not make me who I am.
What’s your favourite quote? “It is not the strongest of the species that survives. Nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is the most adaptable to change.” – Charles Darwin
What’s your main goal or ambition (right now, or in the future)?
Right now, to finish in the top 10 in Australia for CrossFit Open for my age! I have always wanted to be a rural vet, to help the Australian backbone, and pass on my skills to others. By being a woman in a typical male dominate field, I am also showing young rural women that they can follow their dreams. At times, I would like to be a physio, as I love sport and working to help others achieve goals.
Tell us a couple of things you do to relax or have fun?
To relax, I run, CrossFit and ride my horses. My favourite place to completely escape is on top of our water tank listening to music, at sun set, as the sun goes to hide behind the mountains it casts the best scenic landscape background for photos.
