Maggie is one of our 2019 Leadership Competition winners. You can check out her winning entry here and her bio below.
How old are you, what grade are you in and what community/town do you live in?
I am 17 years old and I am in year 11. I live in Ulverstone, Tasmania.
Why did you enter Country to Canberra’s Leadership Competition?
What drove me to enter this competition was the opportunity to grow personally and as a leader. It appealed to me because this is a cause I genuinely care about and have done so ever since I can remember.
What do you hope to get out of the Power Trip to Canberra?
I hope that from this experience, it will allow me to become more confident and develop new skills. I am looking forward to the many workshops I will attend, surrounding significant issues and striving for solutions to obstacles that I may face in the future.
Who is your role model and why?
Like many others, I have multiple role models. One of them is my mum as she has taught me patience, kindness and supported me throughout every challenge. I admire the work of any woman contributing or who contributed to a male dominated field, such as Julia Gillard and Mary Gaudron.
What’s your favourite thing about living in rural Australia?
My favourite thing about living in rural Australia is the focus on community and belonging. Mine is supportive and a good environment for learning. I personally love the arts and the theatre culture is so valued here, I am astounded by how many people come together and celebrate home talent.
What’s your favourite quote?
“I have learned over the years that when one’s mind is made up, this diminishes fear; knowing what must be done does away with fear.” – Rosa Parks.
What’s your main goal or ambition (right now, or in the future)?
My main goal currently is to be successful through learning and results at school so that I can pursue further studies in law. I would also love to travel as much as I can and immerse myself in many different cultures. But my ultimate goal is to be happy, passionate about what I do and what I can offer the world, and to be able to help others globally and nationally that are most in need.
Tell us a couple of things you do to relax or have fun?
I love to perform and have gained an appreciation of theatre and hard work throughout this. I also enjoy spending my down time with friends and eating at small local cafes, especially during spring and summer. It makes me the happiest when I get to be with my family.
