Tahli is one of our 2019 Leadership Competition winners. You can check out her winning entry here and her bio below.
How old are you, what grade are you in and what community/town do you live in?
I am 16 years old and I am in year 11. I live in Nhulunbuy, Northern Territory.
Why did you enter Country to Canberra’s Leadership Competition?
I originally heard about Country to Canberra through my older sister, who was a 2017 winner of the competition. As my passion for gender equity grew over the years, I really wanted to get involved in the Country to Canberra movement and be a part of the empowerment of forthcoming generations.
What do you hope to get out of the Power Trip to Canberra?
I’m so thrilled to interact with such powerful women, and be empowered to pursue leadership roles. Empowerment of women transcends so many brilliant opportunities for young women like myself, so I’m excited to see what growth comes from this experience.
Who is your role model and why?
I am surrounded by many powerful figures, whether it be my teachers at school, or my incredible friends. Nevertheless, my greatest role models are found in my humble abode. My dad, Michael and sister Lara have always been trailblazers and have taught me so much throughout my life. However, my mum is the most powerful woman I have met, my greatest role model, and is a constant source of wisdom and guidance in my life.
What’s your favourite thing about living in rural Australia?
My favourite thing about living in rural Australia is the connections made within the community, and the diverse experiences that living rural has to offer!
What’s your favourite quote?
“You cannot pour from an empty cup, take care of yourself first.”
What’s your main goal or ambition (right now, or in the future)?
My biggest aspiration is to open as many doors as I can for myself in all aspects of my life. Further, I want to take the best care of myself as possible, especially as I enter the graduating class of 2020!
Tell us a couple of things you do to relax or have fun?
I love waking up early to watch the sunrise, and walk along the beautiful beaches Nhulunbuy has to offer. I also love a good movie night with a couple of friends!
