Describe yourself.
Hello! My name is Taylor Kelsey-Shueard. I was born in South Australia, but moved to Victoria when I was 10. I love travelling and have been fortunate enough to travel the world, particularly enjoying my exchange in Belgium last year (it was truly the experience of a lifetime!). I aim to be as active in my school and local community as possible, and have recently begun rowing for my school. I also enjoy the performing arts and have been involved in numerous school productions.
How old are you, what grade are you in and what community/town do you live in?
I’ve recently turned 17 and am in Year 11 at The Hamilton and Alexandra College. I live in a coastal town named Portland, in the South-West of Victoria.
Who is your role model and why?
Whilst there are many people I aspire to be like, I look up to my mum the most. I could not imagine my life without her – she has helped me through my life’s toughest demands and encourages me to be my best and to persist in my goals, no matter the obstacles. She always supports me and is a powerful woman in a top position – something I also aspire to be.
What’s your favourite thing about living in rural Australia?
Around Portland there are plenty of unique places to visit – the country gives you freedoms that city life cannot offer! I’m never bored as there’s always some sort of community event or place to keep myself occupied. Country people are welcoming with open minds and open hearts, look after each other, and are affable.
Why did you enter Country to Canberra’s Leadership Competition?
I knew that this experience would have a major benefit on just my actual self, but also my friends, family and community. It was also a chance to prove to myself that dedication and an open mind can get you anywhere in life.
What do you hope to get out of the Power Trip to Canberra?
I want to be given a voice to change the issues I am focused on and passionate about. I also want to be surrounded by powerful, like-minded women who I will learn from and be inspired by.
What’s your main goal/ambition right now?
At this moment in time, I really want to know that the actions and choices I make are having a positive and aspirational influence on others. The best thing about this is that there are so many ways to make a difference. Just by being involved in my school and community I have the power to make change and support others.
What’s your favourite quote?
“Be the person you needed when you were younger.”
Tell us a couple of things you do to relax/have fun?
In my spare time, I love playing sport and walking with my friends where we can talk about absolutely anything. It’s a great way to unwind and socialise with a diverse group of people. It’s also important to have some self-downtime, so I generally like to listen to a wide variety of music or watch films (particularly in French). If the weather’s warm enough, I love to sit in the sun, too!
