Hayley Carpenter - Winner 2023

Year 11 | 17 Years | Don College | South Spreyton, Tasmania

Why did you enter Country to Canberra’s Leadership Competition?

Learning that C2C offered a Power Trip where I would be able to build my confidence, meet inspiring mentors, expand on my public speaking and leadership skills as well as network with others who have similar goals and aspirations, I knew this was an opportunity I could not miss.

What do you hope to get out of the Power Trip?

I hope to develop my public speaking and communication skills. As someone who wants to enter a highly competitive field, I feel this opportunity will enable me to gain the confidence and skills I will need to thrive in my chosen field and empower me to help my local community.

Who is your role model and why?

As someone who loves science, my role model is Marie Curie. I find it empowering that she was able to achieve two Nobel Prizes and discover new elements in a time where women were discouraged from achieving their goals and believing in themselves.

What’s your favourite thing about living in rural Australia?

Firstly, I love how close I live to the beach! Most importantly, I love the security of living in a rural community. I feel safe knowing most people around me have my best interest at heart. Everyone is kind and is willing to help you out when you are in need.

What’s your main goal or ambition (right now, or in the future)?

My main goal in the future is to become a Haematologist. I have always had an interest in helping others and giving back to my community. I would love to work locally to achieve this as well as travel to disadvantaged countries to help others.

Tell us a couple of things you do to relax or have fun?

I enjoy indulging in a good book, staying active, going to the beach, hanging out with my friends and family and being a part of my local Rotary Club which gives me a platform to assist those younger than me.
