Jessica Butcher - Winner 2024

Why did you enter Country to Canberra’s Leadership Competition? 

I believe this competition is an incredible opportunity to challenge myself past my barriers and grow as a person. Growing up rurally, it can be hard to stand out, and I wanted to prove to myself that I can achieve my goals and what I put effort into.

What do you hope to get out of the Power Trip? 

I hope to connect with likeminded people who challenge stereotypes, and work on my skills around public speaking. This is an invaluable way for me to practise putting ideas into action, and nurture my core beliefs.

Who is your role model and why? 

I am lucky to have been surrounded by people who influence me differently, all equally inspiring me in a positive way. From my parents to my late Nanna, my best friends to my teachers, I believe everyone you meet in your life has an effect on the person you are.

What’s your favourite thing about living in rural Australia? 

I have loved growing up in and around nature, being brought up where you can see the stars in the sky and the ocean in the distance. I think its beautiful that everyone gets to experience the country differently, and everyone’s journey is unique.

What’s your main goal or ambition (right now, or in the future)? 

Putting career aspirations aside, I want to be the type of person others can turn to when they are struggling. I want to show that there are diverse displays of leadership, and they don’t have to change who they are to be a role model.

Tell us a couple of things you do to relax or have fun? 

I enjoy spending time with family and friends, but I also need time alone to recharge and reset. I love reading and spending time in my caravan, crocheting or strumming my guitar, listening to music or watching movies. Exercise is another great way to let go of the day’s energy.
