Lei Yuen - Winner 2024
Lei Yuen | 16 Years | St Mary’s College Broome | Broome, Western Australia
Why did you enter Country to Canberra’s Leadership Competition?
I entered Country to Canberra’s Leadership competition to meet like minded people! Coming from a small rural town it’s hard to find people who are close to your wavelength and can have those discussions on topics that deeply interest myself and the other party. So I’m excited to meet my fellow winners and have some amazing discussions!
What do you hope to get out of the Power Trip?
I would like to be inspired! I want to meet, get to know the other winners and all the other amazing people on the trip. I’m excited to learn their stories and what led them to where they are today. I find learning people’s stories and growing after hearing them can make overall better people and more empathetic individuals!
Who is your role model and why?
Chappell Roan! Not just because of her amazing music but the way she doesn’t hesitate to protect herself mentally, physically and socially from fans, paparazzi and the music industry. Especially how quickly she was able to establish her boundaries after being shot into stardom practically overnight. Also her music is just a vibe to listen to anytime anywhere. Like there isn’t a single occasion where “Hot To Go” is inappropriate… okay maybe a few now I think about it.
What’s your favourite thing about living in rural Australia?
The people and community! We all look out for each other here. It’s a community so tight knit it’s practically one big family here. You’ll always have someone looking out for you and in your corner!
What’s your main goal or ambition (right now, or in the future)?
My goal for the future is to bring bigger advocacy to victims and survivors of sexual harassment. Hopefully to bring more support to rehabilitate survivors, protect our future children and find ways to prevent it.
Tell us a couple of things you do to relax or have fun?
I read and listen to music! My current favourite books are V for Vendetta and The Perks of Being a Wallflower! Trust me when I say that listening to Hozier and Conan Gray whilst reading The Perks of Being a Wallflower is such a dangerously good combo. I MEAN IT!
