Nikki Howard - Winner 2023

Year 11 | 17 Years | Don College | Devonport, Tasmania

Why did you enter Country to Canberra’s Leadership Competition?

After seeing an advert for C2C on my school’s notice board, I became invested in the initiative of the Power Trip and wanted to expand on my experience and skills, whilst sending a message to rural women that they are not bound by their geographical disadvantages.

What do you hope to get out of the Power Trip?

I hope to meet amazing women and non-binary people, gain confidence and share my story of living in rural Tasmania.

Who is your role model and why?

My Nan and Pop are my role models. Growing up on the Tasmanian Hydro, they appreciate our state and have persevered through many hardships. In particular, I admire my Nan’s kindhearted and selfless nature and my Pop’s determination for knowledge and learning.

What’s your favourite thing about living in rural Australia?

Tasmania is quite different to other rural areas of Australia. My favourite part of where I live is by far driving along country roads and before you know it you are at the beach, and if you are lucky enough (which is more often than not), you will be the only person there!

What’s your main goal or ambition (right now, or in the future)?

My main goal is to focus on my year 12 studies next year, to gain acceptance into the university that I would like to go to. In the future, I would love to graduate with a PhD in Nuclear Science.

Tell us a couple of things you do to relax or have fun?

My podcast, Girls at Work, really helps me to detach from the world and focus on the amazing women who I am lucky enough to interview. The editing process is also something I find very fun.
