Olivia Hedge - Winner 2023

Year 11 | 16 Years | Kyneton High School | Newham, Victoria

Why did you enter Country to Canberra’s Leadership Competition?

I entered this competition for the opportunity to form friendships, mentorships and connections with inspiring and innovative people.

What do you hope to get out of the Power Trip?

I hope that Power Trip refines my idea of how I can create positive change in this world and builds my network of incredible people who will work on this goal with me.

Who is your role model and why?

My role model is Saul Griffith, an inventor and renewable energy advocate. He co-founded Rewiring America and Rewiring Australia, organisations that my team was awarded grants and support from to launch our own community campaign, Electrify 3442. I admire his ability to apply STEM to solve climate, and his way of effectively communicating these solutions with the general public. I believe that his approach to catalysing climate action will be crucial to effectively tackling global warming.

What’s your favourite thing about living in rural Australia?

My favourite part about living in rural Australia is being able to live on my property with my grandparents and have access to the space and connection to nature.

What’s your main goal or ambition (right now, or in the future)?

My goal is to reach net negative emissions in Australia and develop resilient communities that are prepared for the inevitable effects of global warming. Australia has a crucial role to play in combating climate change and I want to help by combining communication, community organising, technology and politics to create tangible and effective change.

Tell us a couple of things you do to relax or have fun?

Being with other people is my favourite way to have fun. Chilling with my family in the evening and chatting with friends at school during lunch is always the best way for me to unwind and relax.
