Sophie Bedggood - Winner 2023

Year 11 | 17 Years | Good Shepherd Lutheran College | Girraween/Humpty Doo, Northern Territory

Why did you enter Country to Canberra’s Leadership Competition?

I entered this competition mainly so that I am able to gain new relationships with like minded individuals who are able to push me to be a more independent, hard working leader within my home community. I want to be able to make those connections and tell my story about my life in the NT and how I’d like to make a positive impact in both my inner and wider community.

What do you hope to get out of the Power Trip?

To be able to grow in confidence and public speaking skills whilst having a fun and great time. As well as being able to meet and discuss my hopes and ambitions for the NT with other like minded people and guests that may be present at the Power Trip.

Who is your role model and why?

My role model is 100% my teacher, head of school, Mrs Peta Trahair. When I was going through some rough stages in life she always pushed me to be a better person. She is now in charge of the majority of the school’s staff as well as all year levels. She is one of the strongest, independent, hard working people I have ever met and I will forever be grateful for her. Without her I really don’t think I would have stuck with school and gained so many amazing opportunities.

What’s your favourite thing about living in rural Australia?

Definitely the gorgeous environment we have the privilege of living in, having the opportunity to explore waterfalls; the camping, fishing, and definitely working on cattle stations. I also love how strong our communities are in times of need, this was seen especially through the COVID pandemic, and cyclone Marcus a couple of years ago. Even if it’s simply a car breaking down on the side of the road everyone is there to lend each other a hand.

What’s your main goal or ambition (right now, or in the future)?

Before completing year 12 I would like to take more opportunities within my community and have a good time before heading off on my next chapter in life. I would like to be able to complete high school with an ATAR and finish completing my certificate 3 in Agriculture. I hope to then take a gap year working in the agriculture industry and then going off to university in another state to complete a 3 year Bachelor of Agriculture Degree.

Tell us a couple of things you do to relax or have fun?

Horse riding, fishing, exploring bushland and going down 4WD tracks, going to my job! I work at a veterinary clinic and absolutely love it, working on cattle stations and being in that sort of environment, camping and simply being outdoors.
