Farmers have always been the lifeblood of Australia. Through thick and thin, rain and shine, we work hard to produce the best possible food for our country, and the rest of the world.
In a normal year, Australian farmers can face everything from fierce frosts to debilitating drought. But it does not end with naturally-occurring hurdles.
Farmers are encountered by invasions from animal rights crusaders.
Vegan activists questioning the social justice of our practices and our right to farm.
International governments imposing unreasonable tariffs on our produce.
Constant battles with floundering mental health, and inconsistent social support networks.
This adversity, which is nothing new for farmers, has only made Australian agriculture stronger.
In a year like 2020, the importance of our agricultural industry has become clearer than ever.
While other industries, like hospitality, retail and construction, crumbled under the pressure of the COVID-19 pandemic, relying on government support and benefits to get by, agriculture, as always, pushed on.
The pandemic has also reinforced the importance of our own sovereignty and self-sufficiency, proving that we can only rely on ourselves.
So, this National Agriculture Day, we need to celebrate Australia’s farm sector more than ever. Thank a farmer for the work they do, and let’s keep agriculture strong in Australia.
National Agriculture Day will be celebrated on 20 November, 2020.
